10-12-2024

Here is the top 5 most fierce defencers according to my opinion. List doesnโ€™t based on number of career red cards. I try to make the ranking according to the effect they created during these playerโ€™s playing time. Letโ€™s get into the list.

1. GERARDO BEDOYA

He is in the top of our list and the only one from South America. Gerardo Bedoya is ex-Colombian defensive midfielder who is holding the the worldโ€™s most red card record with incredible 46 red cards during his 319 match career. He spent his career in South America clubs. He played in his country within majority of his career. In the Bogota derby between Independiente Santa Fe and Millonarios in 2012, he was sent off for an elbow and subsequent kick to the head aimed at Millonarios player Jhonny Ramirez in below video. He was punished with 15 matches ban as a result of this tackle. He was started as assistant manager after his retirement in Santa Fe in 2016. He was dismissed after 15 minutes of the first match day. He has shown that he would continue his old habits during his managerial career.

2.PEPE

Brazilian origin Portuguese defender has created the most feared defence duo with Sergio Ramos. Retired ex-Real Madrid player isnโ€™t afraid of making hard tackles. He was mostly remembered on notorious incident with Getafe captain Francisco Casquero. Pepe kicked Casquero after fouling him and received 10 match ban because of that. When you think Messi was created dominance with 26 goals in 47 matches over Real Madrid during Pepe and Sergio Ramos period, you have more respect on Messi. Interestingly, he only had 15 red cards during his 737 match career.

3. PAOLO MONTERO

Ex-Uruguayan international is the first of few names that comes to mind when a hard tackle is mentioned during Juventus matches. Ryan Giggs once described him and Ciro Ferrara as the most tough defence I have ever played against. He had 21 red cards during his 425 match career.

โ€œThe Mad Irishโ€ is mostly known with his tackle against Alf Inge Haaland on Manchester Derby, he had so many hard tackles apart from that during his playing time. Rivalry between Patrick Vieira during Arsenal-Manchester United matches was the every football fans was looking forward to see.

He was the dynamo of Manchester United in his playing time. Also he was a figure and character in and out of the pitch. He wasnโ€™t afraid of saying exactly what he thought. He had an interview with Irish broadcast RTE and claimed Ireland Manager Mick McCarthy doesnโ€™t know anything about football and doesnโ€™t deserve to be the manager of the team just before 2002 World Cup.
