It was a thrilling final between two brazilian team at River Plate’s Monumental stadium in Bueno Aires. 80.000 fans filled Monumental to watch final of the biggest cup of South America.
Match started with fastest red card in cup history. Botafogo was down to 10 men at 2nd minute of the game with Botafogo’s Gregore criminal tackle on Fausto Vera.
Botafogo fans were devastated with this but Botafogo had the lead on 34th minute thanks to Luis Henrique’s opener. 0-1. Luis Henrique was fouled by Atletico keeper Everson just before the halftime on 44th minute. Ex-Manchester United man Alex Telles used the penalty with no mistake. Botafogo ended the first half with 0-2 lead.
Atletico had their hope for comeback with Eduardo Vargas’ header from corner on 47th minute. Atletico increased the pressure with having 1 man advantage to level the match. Vargas had a golden opportunity to equalise but missed that.
Match was closing to end. Botafogo clinched the win with Junior Santos goal on 90+7 minute.
Botafogo had the first Copa Libertadores title in its 123 years history. Brazilian football teams had 24th Copa Libertadores victory with this final and reduced the difference to one with Argentians teams which had 25 titles.
Also Botafogo has secured one of 32 spots in Fifa Club World Cup 2025 with the title. Fifa Club World Cup will be hosted by United States.
